Algebra i or Pre-Algebra for 7th grader?

by Kim
(Georgia)

My son simply finished a regular 6th form math curriculum. He is a very potent math student. He knows his facts, fractions and decimals very well. Do I have to start him in a Pre-Algebra curriculum or can I go straight to Algebra 1? Practice 7th graders accept to take Pre-Algebra?

I'chiliad not sure where to go from here!

Thanks for your help!

assistance me idk if I should get to rsm or something to larn the seventh grade math course, I don't think that algebra (at to the lowest degree in my school) covers all parts of the seventh grade math that we didn't even acquire however, and, well, I'm very confused right at present... there may be some of those problems on the SBA or something and I'one thousand very worried. Past the way, I'm in seventh form, and in Algebra 1, please I really demand some help. :(

For case, I don't know how to find the financial formulas, similar interest, and uncomplicated involvement, and all that, nor finding areas of circles, and such, and I'k sure there'southward a lot more that I don't even know withal, and that I accept to know... :( I hate algebra, if yous saw this comment and you are in 6th grade, DON'T GO TO ALGEBRA (unless you are a very smart/talented math pupil (unlike me), if you're like me, information technology will ruin your math life for adept!!! :( :( :( I regret taking it and then much, and well, I never took any later schoolhouse math classes and the 6th grade math course was piece of cake, and things that I already knew, but in Algebra, I tin barely go along up and it'due south very hard for me, and I have to study the topic at home until 12 am... I don't really want to move downward, because it'south a hassle, like I have to talk to my math instructor and it's very complicated, and I'll have a difficult fourth dimension adjusting to my new grade, and too, it's already a quarter in through the twelvemonth, and I don't think my teacher would be very understanding, then yep, the bulletin is, DON'T Take ALGEBRA, IF YOUR LIKE ME!!!!

Algebra in 3rd grade.
by: Anonymous

We homeschool. Our 9 year quondam is finishing his Algebra 1 book, before what would be 4th class by government schoolhouse age-sorted standards. We do not have grades or semesters, school is every day and whatever we feel like doing.

Information technology's his second go at algebra, this fourth dimension the more than tedious textbook based full-term course. I taught him bones algebra a couple years ago, then calculus, but we are re-trenching now and going back over it carefully.

That makes it pretty like shooting fish in a barrel.

Only if you're homeschooling
by: Tasha

To the skeptics:

In reading the original question, she seems to give many keywords that would indicate this child is homeschooled. She asks if she ("I") have to "start him" and a few other words that, to me, seem to imply he'southward homeschooled. If that's the case, she can practise whatsoever she pleases; the beauty of homeschooling is that we're not tied downwards to someone else's standards for our children. :) :)

Every bit a 12-year homeschooling veteran, I'll tell you that I also see no need in rushing him along unless he has a post-graduation goal that requires higher math and/or scientific discipline. Otherwise, what's the rush? Assuming he's homeschooled, you can put him wherever you want. Depending on the curriculum he'southward been using, it may very well have been pre-algebra concepts anyway. Pay no attending to the big number slapped on the front of the book only pay VERY close attention to the *concepts* taught in the book. For instance, one could conceivably move from Abeka'southward 5th grade Arithmetic into Algebra i with a smooth transition.

Why? Considering that book covers many pre-algebra concepts, 6th course is a big review, and seventh is Basic Math. Pre-algebra is for 8th and Algebra ane is for 0th. If your child is ready to move forward into Algebra 1, don't agree him back based on the publisher calls "6th grade." Pay CLOSE Attending to the publisher you're choosing as well. Different publishers cover the same material at a diff't rates.

For case, we move from Abeka's 5th form into Teaching Textbooks' Algebra 1 with our older 2 simply volition probably get from 5th to sixth and then Algebra 1 with our youngest child (still using TT for Algebra and above, simply because information technology will accept some time off my shoulders. However, because I work from home and used to write math worksheets for Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Avant-garde Geometry for Pearson - seven sheets per lesson - , I know I can help them if needed.).

Since Algebra 1 is a "loftier school level" grade in many areas, don't forget to count those credits if you need to. Here in FL, there is no rule re: ages or courses nosotros "must" cover before graduation, which means legally and technically I could graduate my thirteen y/o if I wanted. *I* have standards and guidelines of things my children must exist able to show me they can exercise before I volition graduate them, though. Therefore, I *won't* graduate her now...but I could if I wanted to do so. FL is a very homeschooling-friendly state. :)

If I'm incorrect and you lot don't homeschool, you tin can pretty much osculation having any choice in the matter goodbye.

Dorsum when I was in the 7th grade, I took Algebra i, which was a whole grade ahead at the fourth dimension. Basically I was in a form filled with 8th graders. Anyways, because of my math skills, I was in a higher form, which isn't very common among the district I'm in. A couple years subsequently, they felt that Algebra 1 was to difficult for eighth graders, so they pushed it upwardly to ninth grade. They made all the kids that were in common core (form level math), redo a yr of "Algebra Prep", so basically repeating the last math grade. When I was in 9th grade, all my buddies were in Algebra ane, while I was in Algebra 2. (Geometry is in betwixt the two) So I was pretty much a very young fourteen year old, stuck in a grade with a agglomeration of Juniors that, unfortunately, were more often than not 17. Now that I look back at information technology, I don't believe this was the bet class for making friends, but I even so acquainted a few of the juniors. At present that is but my story, and you lot should practise what is best for your kid, and if you believe he is set, allow him go for it, because you can always retake math. And it likewise depends if in your commune, pre algebra should be taken in eighth form, or 7th. As I said before, if you call back he tin can do some of the topics (Integers, solving for x, etc.) and then you should let him exercise it, and if he struggles, spotter Khan Academy with him. It can salvage him. ;)

These kids are existence misled
by: Expiry

In reviewing these claims in that location's no style what they are taking in 7th or even 8th grade let alone 6th is in fact Algebra 1
Y'all have schools titling these classes deceptively creating multiple tiers to introduction to Algebra or pre Algebra and a child who's last 9 week grading period learns P-E-Yard-D-A-S and suddenly he/she passed Algebra i in 7th or eighth grade.
What?!?

According to national statistics proficient students A to B student takes pre algebra in 9th grade, highly intelligent students take Algebra ane in 9th form.
Because math placement is near e'er aptitude based y'all tin be a direct A honor whorl student and still state in pre algebra or even bones math freshman year.

If he is very strongly skilful at math, then APA would be skillful for him. I'yard taking APA ( avant-garde pre algebra) it's i grade ahead for me. The tests and home works will exist a scrap harder, such equally long algebra equations and figuring out equations with brackets, like terms, and negative numbers. The tests here are somewhat hard. I suggest pre algebra, information technology's much easier than APA, unless he wants to be challenged. At my school, a B in any advanced classes are dandy. Pre Algerbra is very simple and easy to know, from what I've seen. It basically wraps upwardly everything y'all've learned in sixth. APA on the other hand is normally reviewing everything you've learned in 6th but a bit more challenging. I've been in eye school for the by 2 years ( yes information technology's middle school 6-viii ) and currently is in seventh, only learning 8th grade math and to a higher place. APA is somewhat easier for me since I'm taking Math Team that is a more than challenging than 8th class math. Back AGAIN to your son, it'south his choice if he wants to be challenged or not, but I suggest pre Algerbra that is a easier.

im in seventh class right now and i skipped pre algebra and so im in algebra 1 right now, and im having some problem in doing it, b/c pre algebra provides the bones building blocks for the more than advanced math, so i think information technology totally depends on how comfortable ur son is. I idea i was totally ready, but it turned out i wasnt, biut some kids can skip pre algebra and practice algebra in seventh grade and totally be fine with information technology, so i call back ur son should perhaps practice pre aglebra a flake, and if he thinks he is ready, then he should accept his responsibility and he might accept to study extra, or he might call up its the easiest affair he has ever washed since pre school play time.

He should exist doing adept on other subjects as well
by: Bearding

This is kind of an erstwhile question/thread, simply I'yard still going to reply it.

He should take decent grades in other subjects. Don't requite him a actually difficult grade that he has to spend all his fourth dimension on if he needs to accept proficient grades in other subjects.

I tin can't really say anything else nearly the bodily form, equally I won't be starting information technology until the side by side semester, so that'southward it.

Accept the challenge, but be forewarned!
by: Anonymous

How-do-you-do, all!

As a instructor and parent of eye-schoolers, I'll share what I know. Kickoff, proceed in mind that well-nigh children are introduced to pre-algebra skills way back in first grade (think the __ + 2 = 4 questions on worksheets?). Preparing your kid'due south brain for avant-garde mathematical concepts at a young historic period is standard procedure in today's technological earth.

So, if tests and teachers indicate that your child is ready for Algebra I, s/he is capable of agreement algebra. However, being able to understand mathematical concepts and beingness able to go the right answers on a test with a time limit are two separate things!

My son is just starting 8th class and is currently taking Algebra Two, having survived Algebra I as a 7th grader. He is amazingly talented at math and logic and understands and so much more about numbers than I ever will. However, he works problems SLOWLY and often makes what we call "empty-headed mistakes" -- transposes numbers, forgets to reduce fractions, forgets to write a negative sign, forgets to write the complete answer on the answer bare (even though the complete, right reply is included on his scratch paper!) . . . . And then yeah, Algebra I is a struggle, and then far, Algebra II is promising to be more of the aforementioned.

So how did we make it through Algebra I -- and why am I letting my kid suffer through Algebra II at such a young age? To answer the starting time question, we learned to PRACTICE. Have your child consummate his/her math homework 2-3 times every nighttime. It sounds crazy, but the drill really helps. Yous can too ask the teacher for boosted practise problems -- WITH answers, so your child can check his/her work. This helped my son get faster (though he still struggles with this), and also helped him learn to make fewer silly errors. My son also teamed up with some other pupil to study, check answers, and discuss concepts nearly every night after schoolhouse. Even so, my son struggled and struggled during Algebra I -- not because of the concepts, only because of the lightheaded mistakes and timed test bug.

Then why put him through Algebra II as an 8th grader? Answer: today, my son tells me Algebra I was ane of his all-fourth dimension favorite classes. He admires and respects his Algebra I teacher similar y'all wouldn't believe. She challenged him like no one had ever done before, he struggled, and he ended upwardly with an A in the form for the 2d semester (later on getting Cs and Bs first semester). It taught him not only that he was capable of facing an extremely hard claiming and succeeding, but also what it takes to encounter a claiming (hard work, dedication, force of volition, etc.). He likewise fabricated some amazing friendships in that class -- they all worked together to survive, and going through tough times makes friendships strong.

So, while I am dreading this first semester of Algebra Ii, I'k looking forward to my son'southward feeling of pride and accomplishment afterwards he completes -- and succeeds at! -- this yr of math.

Hope this helps!!!

QUOTE: I took Algebra i in 6th grade. It is easy and fun if y'all can make connections and are willing to endeavour hard to understand the cloth. Still, I know some people who struggled with it. If yous did well in previous math classes, you shouldn't be troubled by Algebra i. - See more than at: https://www.algebra-class.com/algebra-one-or-prealgebra-for-7th-grader.html#sthash.cvKC604K.dpuf

I don't really think it is an easy form for most people. I am starting it in 7th grade tomorrow and I don't know if information technology is hard for me or not. I accept heard that it is an easy grade. It may exist for you lot and perhaps me, but not for virtually people. I recollect pre-algebra is important for people to learn. It should not be skipped unless you already know it. Pre-algebra is but the basics of Algebra and Algebra 1 would probably not brand whatever sense to me without taking pre-algebra in sixth class. I am bold I will exercise well since I got a A in that class.

Sophomore in Pre-Calc Honors
by: Anonymous

This thread is fairly old, but this is more to students/parents who are considering Algebra one in seventh grade for their child or themselves, I'm a sophomore In Honors Pre-Calculus, I got a C in Algebra 1 when I took information technology in 7th grade, C in Geometry, and C in Algebra 2/Trig Honors in 9th. I also had a C in 6th form math but that is considering I was lazy in sixth grade and they put me in Algebra 1 because I passed the Algebra readiness test they gave the states an had good state test scores and aptitude scores and etc. Anyways, what I accept constitute is that, some kids are fine without pre-algebra, only some aren't. But here is a list of things I call back you should know before taking Algebra 1.

i) Order of Operations, you lot may know this as PEMDAS or GEMA or GEMS based on how teachers may have taught you. This is a must to know for success in algebra, in fact I would debate in the most important concept to know for algebra.

ii)Rules of how negative an positive numbers work.

iii)Agreement of absolute value, and number lines.

four)Understanding of variables.

five)HOW TO Manipulate NUMBERS, this is probably the next most of import thing after PEMDAS, you need to know how to motion numbers to unlike sides of the equation.

6)How to plot graphs and take a knowledge of what slope is.

seven)Understand Exponents

This is stuff you should know, information technology won't bear witness up until Geometry, but it isn't taught in Algebra i and you should have learned it in Pre-Algebra.

i)Pythagorean Theorem, non only will you need this for Geometry, simply you will use this through Algebra 2, Trig, Pre-Calc, and almost probable Calculus.

2)Know virtually Equilateral, Scalene and Isoscoles Trianges, these will be important throughout your math life.

Also, make sure you aren't afraid to ask for assistance, and even become a tutor if you experience information technology is needed. As well make sure that y'all are able to do math under a timed test, when I took math, starting in Algebra 2/Trig Honors, nosotros would exist given 35-40 question tests and be given 50 minutes to accept it, and whatever you lot don't finish is incorrect. These weren't exactly quick problems, what yous may think is difficult in Algebra ane, this would exist an example Theorem in Pre-Calc known as the difference caliber.

Pre-algebra
by: Bearding

I may be an anomaly but I institute pre algebra easy, even as a 4th grader. From an objective viewpoint, pre algebra helps you understand some of the more than hard algebra topics, but imo information technology is not necessary. However, some of my classmates, who acheived 95+ in math concluding year, at present observe themselves with a median of near 85.

Pre Algebra or Algebra 1
past: Bearding

I am a 6th grader, and I am taking a pre-algebra grade. I got into that class by getting top marks in math in elementary school. I know middle school is completely different from elementary school, but if your son can handle it, you tin can enroll him in Algebra 1. But Pre-Algebra teaches the skills you need to take for Algebra 1. Algebra 1 is more complicated than Pre-Algebra, and I know from feel. My teacher goes quick and fast, and if you don't know how to keep upwards, yous'll fail in her class. Algebra i isn't all made up of fractions, facts, and decimals, like your son knows well. In Pre-Algebra, you learn nigh variables in equations, how to solve them, and I'one thousand certain many more. If your son knows how to solve this equation: 495=150+3p , then proficient task to him. But be warned, this is a simple pre-algebra equation.

Not everyone is ready in algebra i
by: Anonymous

I am an Algebra teacher and I teach extended classes including 7th graders in Algebra 1. Here is my ascertainment. Some students who have not gotten a D in their previous math classes have a possibility of getting a D or F in Algebra 1. Even students who took Pre-Algebra, some of them are non yet set in Algebra 1. Being smart is is simply ane of the factor to become successful in Math. A pupil should as well exist hard working and has academic support at home. Sometimes, from my observation, information technology is a parent's decision considering of prestige without even considering the student's readiness to have higher level math. I have seen students crying and being upset considering of the challenges in Algebra one, and and then after on, an and so, in the long run, loss their interest in math

To answer your question, aside from Pre-Algebra is a must before taking Algebra 1, Mathematical maturity is besides an of import factor to become successful non only in Algebra 1 just as well in the higher math level.

Algebra 1 or PRe algebra

Hey Kim! I am a seventh grader in algebra 1. I felt completely lost without pre algebra, but at present my grades are improving little by little. You should let your son take the opportunity to exist in Algebra i at present considering although he might neglect, he will accept another chance adjacent twelvemonth, and be dorsum on the same track with his friends. If he does go good grades, awesome! I'm amazed how they are letting many 7th graders take a chance to be 1 pace ahead of their classmates. Allow him do Algebra one and if you see him slacking behind, go him a tutor! Since Akgebra 1 is for eighth grade, my school doesn't have ninth grade math considering they barely offered this this yr. If his schools similar mine, he will get a cipher menstruation in the high school, and for ane of his 6 periods, he will probably be a teachers aid or some sort of assist for staff. My Opinion
past: A 7th Grader

Information technology depends on your son. I'k in seventh grade currently, and in Algebra 1. It might exist a bit different for me since I'm bold your son is dwelling house-schooled, plus where I live, elementary school goes to sixth class and centre schoolhouse starts in 7th grade.

I agree wth Karin'southward post; a test is a proficient idea to make sure. If the math your son is taking is as well easy for him and not a challenge of all, then Algebra will probably be better. Anything you lot can do without trying can easily get monotonous over fourth dimension. Plus, if he takes Algebra now, I'm pretty sure he'll have a few higher credits past the fourth dimension he graduates high school.

Personally, I find that Algebra i is like shooting fish in a barrel for me, even without Pre-Algebra. Maybe you can try having him take Pre-Algebra for a week or ii before deciding.

Algebra ane or Pre-Algebra for 7th grader
by: Karin

Pre-Algebra is more than of a standard class for seventh grade. If the kid tin get out middle schoolhouse with a solid foundation in Algebra ane, then they will be better prepared for high school.

Notwithstanding, if your child is struggling, slow downwards and work at their pace. If you lot try to push them through, then they really struggle with Algebra and the higher level math classes.

Information technology's best to build a solid foundation and have your child be confident in their math ability, rather than to push them through just to stay "on course level".

I hope this helps,

Pre-algebra or Algebra i
by: Karin

Kim,
Thanks for using the homeschool forum. Depending on your son's math ability level, yous could get-go a Pre-Algebra curriculum or Algebra i curriculum. In that location are many students in the public school system, who accept a 6th grade math form that concentrates on Pre-algebra skills. These students then keep to take Algebra 1 in 7th class. These students are typically the GT students. There are as well many students who are performing at grade level who take Pre-algebra in 7th grade and Algebra 1 in eighth grade.

I would have your son take the Algebra Readiness Test. It can be found at: https://www.algebra-course.com/algebra-readiness-exam.html. If he does well, and then I would try an Algebra one curriculum. Take a look through the Algebra i units on the Nav Bar to become an idea of the skills that are studied in Algebra ane.

Before yous offset an Algebra 1 curriculum, please make certain that your son knows the integer rules! This is one extremely of import concept that will be used continuously throughout Algebra one!

If you take whatsoever other questions, delight permit me know!

Wishing you the best,
Karin Hutchinson
